Core modules

Financial Markets and Portfolio Analysis – Taught in London, this module provides fundamental review of the theory of valuation of financial securities, while developing students’ ability to analyze securities using computerized tools and solutions - including informational sources such as Bloomberg’s.

Risk Hedging and Financial Instruments – Taught in London, this module is designed to familiarize students with the practical use of many of the financial securities and derivative products that they are exposed to across the other modules in the course. Most notably, the hedging of portfolios of securities with financial derivatives is covered from a practical point of view and various hedging strategies are compared and contrasted.

Quantitative Research Methods in Finance – Taught in London, this is a module designed to assure that each student in the course has a level of mathematics sufficient to understand and avail themselves of the techniques and theory across the other modules of the course.

> On the Poitiers City Campus

Mergers and Acquisitions – This module, taught in Poitiers, examines the types of transactions that typically take place in the consolidation of activity within a corporate sector. Analysis and valuation techniques are examined and compared. The underlying theory concerning ownership is reviewed so as to provide a foundation for the understanding of how to effectuate efficient decision making in the face of industry consolidation.

International Corporate Strategy – This module, taught in Poitiers, is focused upon the large variety of financing techniques and strategies typically encountered in globally diversified corporations.

Corporate Finance – This module, taught in Poitiers, considers the academic theory regarding the optimal financial structure of the fi rm. It then examines the concept of the cost of capital and the pricing and valuation methodology applied to various securities comprising the capital structure of the firm.

Accounting, Analysis and Control – This module taught in Poitiers, France, provides students with an overview of
financial reporting principles and the use of  financial statements in the control of corporate activity.

Global Financial Markets – This module, taught in Poitiers, aims to develop an understanding of the large spectrum of the different major capital markets across the world, as well as principal differences in the regulation and day today functioning of the markets.

Banking Systems – This module, taught in Poitiers, provides students witha broad overview of the various types of banking systems present across the nations of the world. Furthermore, it examines the issues of prudential regulation and the problems of risk associated with banks in various parts of the globe.

Dissertation/Project – The dissertation is a significant module that provides an opportunity for the student to undertake a substantial piece of research in the field of derivatives valuations or applications. The student is expected to demonstrate a synthesis of the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course. This is the largest piece of assessed work undertaken on the course and is seen as the clearest expression of your ability to study at Masters level.

Structure and Length

This innovative programme course is offered as a collaborative venture with ESCEM School of Business and Management in Poitiers, France. It involves studying in both the UK and in France, as well as undertaking a work placement anywhere in the world. This course enables you to acquire an advanced understanding of recent developments, concepts and techniques in accounting, financial analysis, financial management and strategy within an international context. The four-month work placement offers a unique opportunity to reinforce your study with valuable work experience. Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of two Masters Degrees - an MSc in International Financial Strategy from London Metropolitan University and a Master in Science in Global Financial Management from ESCEM. This unusual dual award gives you an increased chance of employment and a competitive edge in the field of global financial strategy. The course is taught in English in both France and the UK, so it is not necessary to be a French speaker to undertake the program

Assessment

Each module consists of a mixture of scheduled classes, guided learning and self-directed learning. Teaching and learning is undertaken through lectures, seminars, discussions, group activities, workshops, projects, tutorials and self managed study. A variety of assessment is utilized including essays, reports presentations, case studies and exams.
The program includes a work placement and a dissertation.
